All Out Anime Sports, School, Seinen Review

All Out !! is an anime by studio Madhouse in collaboration with the TMS Entertainment studio. To be honest, hearing the name Madhouse studio as an anime cultivator is enough to make goosebumps on my neck.

This is because the quality of work made by Madhouse studios is always above average. But the question now is, will this anime story be as good as the quality of the animation?

All Out !! 01All Out !! Synopsis

The story begins at the school entrance ceremony of Kanagawa High School where Kenji Gion, a small but brave go-getter joins the rugby club. He is joined by his classmate, Iwashimizu, who has a complicated past, and sub-captain Hachiouji, who always takes good care of his club members.

Lastly, there is Captain Sekizan, who has tremendous strength but keeps his card close to his chest. With these differences in both personality and physical performance, the team must learn to work and grow together so that they can be the best.

All Out !! 02All Out !! Storyline

In my opinion, this anime story is not very original. This anime tells the story of Gion, an amateur who doesn’t know anything about Rugby, and then he joins a team that is also practically an amateur considering that this team does not have a qualified coach or advisor.

This kind of approach reminds us of the anime Eyeshield 21, the devil bats daemon team itself was not originally a viable amefuto team. They kidnapped many members from other clubs to come to play. But over time they turned into a team to be reckoned with. This kind of process is a common path that seems to be a template in the Sports genre story.

The main character of this story, Gion himself reminds us off well, Shoyo the short from the anime Haikyuu. Even so, I must say that the 25 episodes of this anime did not provide a meaningful process. The beginning of this anime was centered on the character Gion, but over time this anime shifted and told more about their rugby team as a whole.

This kind of approach has been used by other Sports anime such as Ace of Diamond, but to be honest I don’t really like this kind of approach because it seems too wordy.

All Out !! 03All Out !! Character

To be honest, this anime is stuck with the same mistake made by the Ace of Diamond anime, namely they are trying to introduce everyone. Okay, we have to realize that the core team of a rugby team has at least 15 players, introducing 15 people to the audience in my opinion is not a good step considering the ability to remember someone is limited.

If we learn from anime Other legendary sports such as Captain Tsubasa and Shoot we will realize that out of the 11 people in their team they will probably only introduce 2 or 3 people. Trying to introduce more than 5 characters in one anime will only make this story have a superficial character.

Okay, at first we were treated to the appearance of Gion, a teenager who is stubborn and doesn’t want to budge. Then this was contrasted with the lanky and timid Iwashimizu. Up to this stage, everything looks fine but when this anime starts to introduce other characters such as Ebumi, Mitsuo, etc. the story itself becomes unfocused.

All Out !! 04All Out !! Art

The animation quality of this anime is not in doubt, considering that the anime studio that worked on it is a studio like Madhouse and TMS Entertainment.

This makes the quality of the animation above average. Even so, I am not quite suited to the Artwork which seems to tend to expose muscles. Well, for the size of a high school student, their muscular body seems very compelling. Maybe they are more suitable to be called a bodybuilding team than a rugby team with muscles like that.

All Out !! Ost

Okay, so this anime has 2 opening songs and 2 ending songs. The first opening song of the anime is “flower” sung by Lenny Code Fiction and closes with the song Zenryoku Shounen produced by Tamio Okuda. To be honest, for an anime with a Sports genre, the two opening and ending songs seemed less interesting and passionate.

Fortunately, their second opening song, Seija no Koushin, was able to cover that mistake. The second ending song, No Side, sung by Alisa Takigawa, also gives off an interesting mellow impression.

All Out !! Overall

Storyline: 7.5 / 10
Characters: 6.5 / 10
Art: 8/10
Ost: 7.5 / 10
All Out !! : 7.2 / 10

Overall I have to say that this anime tries to give a new anime by presenting a rugby theme, however, the way of storytelling and the quality of the character development itself is not as interesting as I imagined. However, if you are curious or if you want to change the atmosphere, this anime is still worth watching.
